Lab-grown or mined: what is actually different?

Same crystal, same sparkle, same grading. The difference is where it started.

A lab-grown diamond is not a lookalike. It is diamond: carbon atoms locked into the same crystal structure that makes a mined diamond the hardest natural material we know. It has the same hardness, the same way of bending light, and the same fire.

How a diamond grows in a lab

There are two methods. One recreates the heat and pressure found deep in the earth; the other builds the crystal layer by layer from carbon-rich gas. Either way, the result is a diamond, grown over weeks instead of formed over millions of years.

Graded the same way

Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same four Cs as mined ones: cut, colour, clarity and carat. Independent labs such as IGI and GIA grade them, and a gemmologist needs specialist equipment to tell the two apart.

So what is different?

  • Origin. One grew in a lab, the other in the earth.
  • Price. A lab-grown diamond costs considerably less than a mined diamond of the same size and quality, so the same budget goes much further.
  • Traceability. A lab-grown stone comes from a known source.

Everything you see and feel when you wear it is the same. That is why every piece at Hot Ice Jewels is set with lab-grown diamonds.
